I was thinking, like household ones. Since most other sponges are continually underwater, their existence would invalidate my question.

I've never exploded a sponge. I did set one on fire once. Now when I worry about sterilizing my sponges, I just throw them away and take out a new one rather than nuke it to kill the germs.
