I don't know of any other remakes (although there may be some)

Golden Girls was remade as 'Brighton Belles'. It was truly dire. Probably best forgotten.

It sounds like the 'stoopid merkins' really missed the point of LoM

But then 70's cop shows were different in both countries, so maybe that's why they screwed it up... they just didn't get it

And I think you really missed the point of this post - it was never meant to insult the intelligence of 250million people.

wasn't meant to be an insulting comment... it was said in a silly way to be slightly silly, though on reading back I can see that maybe I could have been phrased it better...

The main point was that we had a very good pedigree of 70's cop shows to build upon for LoM, which maybe the americans didn't, but they saw a successful show and tried to copy it whilst missing the point.

I'll shut up now ;)

Cool - hopefully my USian friends will be mollified :)

Both countries have a history of cop shows, very different ones, but as I was saying to Mavis growing up with one doesn't preclude appreciation of the other. In fact now I think on it I've seen more USian ones than UKian ones. I know we're agreeing, but basically I think the USian writers, whilst capable of great things, dropped the ball on this one and by dumbing it down or changing the format spoiled something that could have been enjoyed both sides of the ocean :)

Firstly - they did remake dr who - that's what the Paul McGan dr who movie basically was..... there's a reason why nerds argued for ages wether or not it counted as canon.

Secondly - remaking lom makes perfect sense. Lom is a cultural rewview - so there is little point in doing a cultural review of anything else. Plus - if your not a fan of the sweeny - Gene Hunt loses something. And nobody in the states is ever going have seen that. There cop shows was the starsky and hutch....

But that's what I was trying to say - we have the USian cultural experience exported here all the time and we cope. Hill St Blues, Starsky and Hutch, Cagney and Lacey, whatever - all survived the journey.

I have never seen an episode of The Sweeney in my life. Maybe there's a facet of Gene I'm missing because of it, in fact I'd say I'm definitely missing one, but if they'd written him to only appeal to viewers old enough to remember 1970's police shows he wouldn't have half the appeal/fans he does.

There is :)

Harvey Keitel and Colm Meany are both excellent actors, but they just weren't right. Dennis Leary would have been better and probably a whole host of others than aren't coming to mind at the moment. Or, you know, showing it in it's original state :)
