It gives you access to the internet (small initial cost in some cases) ability to pass your Mii's to other people, access to the voting channel, system updates (nothing seems that important so far) and the Mii voting channel (Quite fun) and the virtual console downloads.

Nothing essential really, just a "nice to have".

Ah - ta. I'll no doubt get it hooked up at some point but I'll not worry about it as a priority then.

I am pretty happy with mine without being online. We connected once to download patches though. I bet you don't need to though.

Recent games have system updates included with them, (Metroid Prime 3 & Super Mario Galaxy) your console gets updated automatically. To add channels you need to go one line but there is not really anything there that you would need. I've not heard of any games being updated, but Super Paper Mario did contain a bug, so possibly they are included in the system updates.
