Huh?

I had this conversation today at work with a new co-worker who is starting at the UW this fall as a Sociology Grad student. I happened to be wearing a necklace that is a little metal sloth that hangs down from the chain, it's new so I was excited to wear it for the first time ( Read more... )

I remember last year when one of my second graders did a report on the sloth, his colored pencil drawing to accompany it was really good.

Hm... I guess it's possible that someone might not know what they actually look like since most zoos don't have them and you have to go LOOKING online for them.

But not knowing they exist? Strange.

My favorite little park in MN - Como Zoo has a Tropical Encounters section which is a lot like Olbrich with a few animals interspersed....one of my favs that was added just before I moved back to Madison was a sloth.

If I were to give this coworker of yours the benefit of the doubt I would assume the conversation went something like this for him:
You: My sloth is happy.
Him: What?
You: *Pointing to your necklace, which also looks like pointing at yourself, which could be because you're emphasizing the "my" not pointing at jewelry that looks like a sloth* My sloth, it's happy.
Him: (Not seeing the necklace) Is the sloth a real animal?
You: Well this one isn't... this one is made of metal. But, in general yes, a sloth is a real animal.
Him: Oh, I wasn't sure [what in the fuck you were talking about and I probably still don't realize unless I've finally seen the necklace].

Maybe? Eliphino. (Also a real animal.)

I'm pretty sure that he saw the necklace at least the first time. He might not have known what it was supposed to be but I'm pretty sure he saw it.

And if he didn't see it was a sloth then he wouldn't have thought you were pointing to it. Plus, how often do people express their emotions by anthropomorphizing their jewelry?
