I've just come upstairs from my mum having a conversation over the dinner table with my brother about this sort of thing. Parents should, apparently, know the parents of their children's SOs, and in addition, children should spend Christmases separately with their own families (i.e. parents) until they are married, at which point they may spend Christmas together, going to each family alternate years.

My brother is not convinced. Nor am I.

Tbh, I think their first meeting is more likely to be awkward than anything. I mean, I found it intensely irritating how polite my parents are around my brother's girlfriend. I mean, really. You can't feel at home when you're also constantly being asked how your stay can be made better. As we're always told before exams, the examiner isn't out to get you. Same goes for parents. Have fun!

Traditions in these areas are really confusing for me, because there is nothing traditional left about my family in general.
I tend to go with the idea that if it feels right, it's the right time. And it was in this case. My dad really likes Chantra a lot. My step-mom was kind of... bitchy, but she's always like that, and when she said goodbye to us, she passed on a handshake and offered a hug, so that seemed promising. So all was very well!
