I have a problem and I need your help deciding. There's a New York trip this summer with CSU for a photography class and a movement in art class. I really really want to go (i mean that's gotta be the opportunity of a lifetime). But the problem is that I also need to take a Calc class in the summer and if I go to NY I would miss the first week of ( Read more... )

I would say fuck the calculus class and go to New York. Since calc is hard i'd rather take it during the regular school semester instead of cramming it all in your head and then worrying about forgetting it.

The first week of class will probably only be going over basic derivatives, and if you get the syllabus, you can at least check up on it. Tell the teacher and he'll probably be fine. As long as you make up for it when you get back a week isn't that bad. I made a B in Calc 1 when I took it over the summer; the first half of it was fairly simple and the second half was harder, just be sure to stay on top of it. But first week should be really easy basic stuff. I think you should go to NY; it is a good opportunity and if you need help with Calculus there are tutors or you can ask me.

For example, first week of classes we learned derivatives. I can teach you them now. derivative of x^3 (x to the third) is 3x^2. the derivative of x^4 is 3x^3. derivative of x^2 is 2x. See the pattern? The second derivative of x^3 is the derivative of 3x^2, bring down the two, multiply it by the constant already there and subtract one from the exponent. so it's now 6x^1 (or just 6x), second derivative of x^4 (first derivative 3x^3) is 9x^2. second derivative of x^2 is just 2 (because you bring down the "1" exponent, then subtract one from the exponent which makes it x^0, which is one). Make sense? That'll be your first week of classes.
