Paging Dr LJ ... Simple Web Site Tools

Feb 22, 2011 12:58

A friend asked me what a fast way was to get a simple web site up. I believe this would be one advertising a small consulting business. Suggestions so far are Wordpress or Drupal. Thoughts?

I find Wordpress an order of magnitude easier to manage than Drupal; it only gets annoying when you get into tweaking design :) I further suggest getting hosting on Dreamhost, where they'll handle all the server-side nonsense for you and let you install WP with one click.

All of this is also what I'd have to say.

i'd avoid drupal for the beginner. for sheer speed of setup - e.g. from zero to "i have a functional and non-shitty looking site" in under two hours...

create a free site at wordpress.com. (last i checked, your content should be portable to a self hosted wordpress instance later.) have your domain name redirect to the wordpress page. wordpress has its shortcomings, but wins in the beginner category.

also worth a look:
typepad.com (hosted movabletype, not sure whether it's portable later)
squarespace.com ?
blogger.com ? (idiotproof, but maybe all one needs?)
