At The Sideline of Love chap 4 (end)
Chapter 4:
Friday: Journal #4 - A Lonely Birthday
It has been 3 days since I’ve seen Kyle. It has been 3 days since I’ve been avoiding Darwin. Today is my birthday and I’m not going to celebrate it because I have nobody to celebrate with. I’ll just treat it like any other normal day.
No matter how hard Sky tried to convince himself that it was just an ordinary day, he can’t help but feel lonelier than usual. School ended just a hours ago. The sky was getting darker and the moon was starting to get brighter. Right now, he’s just sitting on one of the swings in the park. He wanted to contact Kyle but he ran out of load and so he held his cellphone, wishing that Kyle would contact him instead.
//Why am I wishing for Kyle anyways? Shouldn’t I be wishing for Darwin instead?// Sky thought. Then another part of his mind replied. // Kyle is your new crush now. // Sky sighed at that. //Crush huh?//
“You’ll get wrinkles if you keep on frowning like that.” It was Darwin. He sat on a swing beside Sky.
Sky noticed that his mask of indifference didn’t fall off from his face. “As if you care.” He noticed that he didn’t stutter. He noticed that his voice was in monotone as usual. // I definitely got over him as a crush. //
“Of course, I am. Aren’t we friends?” Darwin replied.
“Nope. We’re merely batch mates.” Sky said wryly.
“And rivals for Kyler’s love.” Darwin added.
“Excuse me?!?!” Sky’s eyes widened a bit as he heard Darwin say that.
“You heard me. We’re rivals for Kyler’s love.” Darwin said with his picture-perfect smile. “The other day when I was about to kiss you. I saw the car and immediately knew that it was Kyler’s.” He admitted. “I didn’t mean for you to think that I’m a playboy.”
Then everything that happened for the past week flashed in Sky’s head. “Kyler must also be the reason why you joined the basketball club and why you became the player that you are right now.” He saw Darwin nod at that. // All these time, Darwin only wanted attention from Kyler. Why didn’t I notice that?!?!// Then his other part replied. // Because you are busy at crushing at Darwin yourself.//
“Happy Birthday.” Darwin greeted, snapping Sky out of his thoughts. “My birthday gift for you is coming so I should get going.” Darwin stood up. “I’ll only let him be with you today because it’s your birthday but starting tomorrow, we will be rivals.” He walked out of the park. Once he was outside of the park, he saw Kyle walking towards the park.
“I don’t know what you’re up to for telling me about Sky’s birthday but thanks anyway.” Kyle said as he passed by Darwin.
“You’re welcome.” Darwin hid his smirk. // I’ll have you to myself soon. Just wait. //
“Hey, Sky!” Sky looked up from the ground to see Kyle walking towards him. “Somebody told me that today is your birthday.” Kyle said with a smile.
“It was Darwin.” Sky stated.
Kyle’s smile dropped. “Yeah, it was him. Are you okay?” He noticed that Sky didn’t look happy at all.
“I’m fine. Thanks for coming but I have to get back.” Sky stood up.
“I can drive you to your apartment.” Kyle offered.
“No thanks.” Sky refused but before Sky could take another step, his path was blocked by Kyle.
“I know something is wrong. Tell me what it is.” Kyle demanded.
“What is it to you?” Sky glared.
“What did Darwin tell you?!?!” Kyle was almost shouting as he demanded. Sky stepped back as Kyle used that tone. “I’m sorry. It’s just that Darwin is always around to make my life miserable.”
“He told me that he likes you. He told me that you’re the reason why he is in the basketball club and why he became the player he is today!!! He did all of these to get you to notice him. How dare you say that he makes your life miserable!?!? You have no idea what an unrequited love can do to people.” Sky argued back, panting afterwards as he lost his breath.
“Then what?!?! You’re telling me to love him back?!?!” Kyle clenched his fists.
Sky placed back his mask of indifference and calm down. “No, because I do know that you already love him back.” Kyle looked surprise when Sky said this. “You kissed me because you thought Darwin’s lips touched mine. When I saw you two in the covered court, you were actually kissing him back and since you know that Darwin was my crush, you acted as if you like me so I‘ll stop paying attention to him.”
There was a long pause before Kyle could said something. “I’m sorry.” He apologized.
“Both of you are idiots.” Sky sighed. Although he was expecting for Kyle to admit that his analysis was true, he was wishing that Kyle would deny it and explain something else. “Darwin likes to walk home. You can still catch up with him by car.”
Kyle looked at his with surprise on his features. // Is he encouraging me//
“Confess your feelings to him and tell him that he has no rival for your love.” Sky had a bitter smile on his face. “Now, go!!!”
Kyle nodded. “Thank you.” He said softly before heading towards his car and drove off.
“Happy Birthday To Me.“ A sad tone of voice sang the birthday song as he walked home. In the end, Sky ended up loveless and lonely once again on his birthday.
