Does taking up a Marshalling staff mean what I think it means, and if so would you care to expound on that a bit?

Probably not what you think. Scott was a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism like I have been for 20 years. A marshal is essentially the safety officer that officiates a fighting bout. In our case, fencing and rapier play. The marshal carries a staff in order to block the fighters from running off the fighting area into the spectators or vice versa. The staff is a symbol of both your position on the field and a non-threatening means to safely interpose yourself in a bout or melee when needed.

For some of us, these staves are an extension of our-self in a sense. He was a good friend, so to be handed his is a personal honor.

Ah. So it means exactly what I *did* think it means.

A pity I no longer have the patience for hobbies that require me to spend half an hour getting dressed before I go out and play.

best,

Joel
