“Senpai.” Jongin sighs dreamily, hands propped beneath his chin. He stares at a certain man behind that transparent glass who looks so adorable doing his work. Do Kyungsoo is distracting. His whole being is distracting. Even when he breathes, Jongin thinks it’s distracting. It doesn’t help that Kyungsoo is the boss.
Kim Jongin is your ordinary secretary and is would be proud to say that he has a pivotal position in the office. ‘One does not simply underestimate the power of secretaries.’ He once exclaimed to Baekhyun, a fellow white-collar worker who has the cubicle behind Jongin who rolled his eyes at the statement.
Being a secretary means frequent interactions with Kyungsoo since he needs to manage the schedules for his boss and the likes. Not that he’s complaining. It is quite obvious, the way Jongin would stare holes through the window in front of Kyungsoo’s office room. Honestly, Jongin has the biggest crush on Kyungsoo ever since high school. How he managed to get employed in the same company as Kyungsoo remains a mystery. Jongin likes to say that he and Kyungsoo are meant to be. Every staff in the company notices how he always looks like a lovesick puppy but alas, the boss though, is oblivious.
Baekhyun chucks a pencil aiming towards Jongin’s head which is delivered precisely. Jongin snaps from his castle building for a moment to glare at the impudent soul who just stroked him. He is met with a grinning Baekhyun, showing no remorse of his blunder. Jongin shoots daggers at him.
“Dude, we understand you pining for that fine ass but please, can’t you wait until office ends?” Baekhyun exclaims a little too loudly, making the whole office turn towards them. That little shit with his big mouth. Jongin balled a piece of scrap paper and shoots it towards Baekhyun who happily dodges the ball of fury. “Shut up.”
Sometimes, Jongin do wonder how Chanyeol could stand that boisterous mouth of Baekhyun. It drives him insane. But then again, Chanyeol himself is rowdy. Suit them.
…
“BAAAABY.” Chanyeol booms with that caveman voice of his while latching his lanky arms around Baekhyun’s shoulders from behind. Baekhyun giggles in response. He giggles. HE FUCKING GIGGLES. Jongin cringes as those two make kissy faces at each other. It’s revolting, all the rainbows and sparkles surrounding Chanyeol and Baekhyun.
The area becomes silent for few moments and this piques Jongin’s interest. Are those two out already? He whips his head around only to find the obnoxious duo sucking each other’s faces. “NOT IN THE OFFICE, YOU SHITHEADS. GET A FUCKING ROOM.” Jongin screeches. He feels like pulling all his hair out but then he would be bald and he won’t look attractive again and Kyungsoo might be horrified so he restrains himself.
Chanyeol spares Jongin a look. “Now that’s not how you speak to elders.” He blurts with that shit-eating grin plastered on his face. “Besides, no one is here okay its lunch break remember?”
“Yeah. And Jongin, honey, you’re just jelly.” Baekhyun adds and tugs at Chanyeol’s tie as they resume whatever they are doing in the first place. Well ouch.
Jongin narrows his eyes and tosses an owl plushy which was actually a gift from Baekhyun perched on his desk at the two before stomping his way out of the office.
…
So that is how Jongin finds himself in the hallways, purchasing steaming hot tea from a vending machine. He grabs the now filled to the brim paper cup and sits on the bench opposite the machine. Sighing deeply, he reflects on his pathetic, unrequited love life. Even idiots like Chanyeol and Baekhyun found their soul mate, which saddens Jongin because he considers himself to be a normal person who should be in a relationship because he is normal. Plus, he is charming.
Unfortunately, he wishes for a courtship with a dashing knight in shining armor or maybe a fabulous senpai (because Jongin watched too much Disney movies and read one too many mangas) in the form of a certain Do Kyungsoo who is, indeed sadly oblivious to the fact.
“Why the hell do bad things happen to good people?” Jongin sighs for the umpteenth time since the past few minutes. Perhaps, he should make a move instead of silently pining for the man. I mean, it had been so long he feels like dying. Or maybe, just maybe, he had forgotten when the last time he dated someone was. He could be a sappy romantic but even if it takes years, he’d still wait for Kyungsoo.
“Hey.” A painfully familiar voice resonates from beside Jongin. He wheezes unattractively as he takes in Kyungsoo’s smile and spilling his lukewarm tea over his slacks, a dark blotch spreading on the surface.
“…Shit.” Kyungsoo’s eyes nearly popped out of his sockets as his hands made a frantic move to grab the opened pack of tissues in his pants pocket and urgently dabs it on Jongin’s soiled garment.
“I’m so, so sorry. I didn’t know my voice is heart attack inducing,” Kyungsoo exclaims with his strange sense of humor but Jongin approves. Tiny hands still busy wiping the sticky beverage marks. Jongin would be lying if he said he is not enjoying Kyungsoo’s pretty hands on him. But it makes him unable to think straight. He decides to keep silent but it would be rude so he should at least respond to Kyungsoo.
“...Uh, it’s okay, really.” Jongin contemplates for a moment. He continues with a garbled I like you please go out with me because Kyungsoo is so near he’s having a panic attack and his brain contents decided to party. That would conveniently explain why he inadvertently confesses. Or maybe not.
Kyungsoo frowns. “Excuse me?”
“What.” Jongin deadpans.
The crease on Kyungsoo’s otherwise smooth forehead deepens. “Did I mishear something?”
“No- I mean, yes. Yes, you’ve heard wrong.” A sheepish smile made way on Jongin’s face. Kyungsoo nods in approval but his expression shows the other way round.
A group of their company’s staffs walks past both of them, signing that break time is over. Jongin deems this as the perfect timing to flee. Just a few steps and suddenly Kyungsoo grabs his arm. His eyes widens as he is being twirled around so he will face the smaller man.
“Hey are you free tonight? Uh...Don’t get this the wrong way, okay. I’m just wondering if you could lend me a hand.”
Jongin ponders upon the request because it’s Kyungsoo but it doesn’t take him long to nod his head albeit too eagerly. “So, I’ll see you. Later.” Kyungsoo flashes a brilliant smile. Jongin internally screams because cute and slowly walks towards the office with pretty flowers blooming in his heart.
“And yes,” Suddenly Kyungsoo called out. “I’d like to go out with you.”
…
Jongin peeks at the round wall clock in front of him. The office is eerily silent since it’s late in the evening so all the staffs went home. This leaves the janitor, Kyungsoo and himself in the office.
He sees Kyungsoo gesturing him to come inside his room so he did. Jongin slowly twists the door knob and enters. He was told to take a seat opposite the man.
Jongin sits quietly for few minutes. Kyungsoo is still typing on the keyboard.
“Uh…sir?” Finally Jongin breaks the cold silence.
Kyungsoo flips the laptop screen close and picks his bag up. He smiles at Jongin. “Let’s go.” Jongin gapes at him, brows shooting up.
“But sir, don’t you need my help or something?” Jongin asks.
Kyungsoo is still smiling. “Not at the moment, Jongin.” He says with a soft tone. “So, let’s go now?”
Jongin nods and cracks a wide grin.
…
The walk to the bus station is quiet. Only sounds of shoes scraping against the hard floor can be heard. The night air is quite chilly. Kyungsoo wonders why he left his sweater at home and sighs. He cozies up to Jongin who looks pretty comfortable with his fleece jacket. Jongin flinches at the sudden proximity and feels heat rising up his cheeks.
“Jongin?” Kyungsoo looks up at him. “Are you okay?”
He just shakes his head and then notices that Kyungsoo is not wearing any outer layer apart from his blazer. He must be freezing. “Sir, don’t you feel cold?” Jongin shrugs his jacket off and places it around Kyungsoo’s smaller frame. The latter beams at him and mutters a thank you.
Just then, the bus pulls off at the curb and few passengers exits the vehicle. Jongin allows people to leave before he ushers Kyungsoo to get on the bus.
Both of them settle down at the seat right on the back of the bus. Kyungsoo is looking out at the window, probably enjoying the city scenery at night. His side profile is so pretty, Jongin thought. He continues his intense staring until Kyungsoo turns around to face Jongin. He might felt his gaze all along. Jongin quickly averts his eyes, focusing on the bus’ ceiling.
Moments later, Jongin side-eyes Kyungsoo who is still facing outside. His pale hand is placed on the empty seat between them while the other clutching at Jongin’s jacket. Jongin draws a deep breath while his right hand slowly creeps towards Kyungsoo’s. Their hands brushes against each other and Kyungsoo must have noticed this because he intertwines their fingers together.
Jongin is positive that he probably resembles a tomato. However, he did not miss the blush adorning Kyungsoo’s cheeks and that made his heart swell in joy. He feels the fluffy clouds underneath his feet and basically he could die of happiness. This might be a start, he thinks.
…
The bus finally arrives at Jongin’s stop. He sees Kyungsoo rise up from his seat. “Is this your stop too?” Jongin queries him. Kyungsoo gives him a slight nod as a reply. His joy is obvious as he skips behind Kyungsoo through the aisle.
Both of them walk home together again. Apparently, Kyungsoo lives in a plush condominium few blocks above Jongin’s apartment. Therefore Kyungsoo will leave first. As they reach Kyungsoo’s residency area, Jongin turns to face him.
“Sir, W-“
“Drop the formalities will you?” Kyungsoo cuts off. “We are outside the office anyway.” He grins. Jongin smiles and continues. “Sir…I mean, Kyungsoo. Would you go out with me?”
Kyungsoo laughs and holds his right hand. “Told you I will just now, right? Don’t tell me you didn’t hear.” Jongin scratches his not itchy scalp as he remembers. Of course he heard. “So…I guess I’ll see you tomorrow?” He flashes a smile. Suddenly he feels a pair of warm lips on his cheek and then sees Kyungsoo shoving back the jacket in his arms. His brain goes haywire trying to process the situation. It happened so fast he forgot how to breathe.
“Thanks for the jacket. Have a safe way home.” Kyungsoo waves at him. After few steps he finds himself being pulled back by small but firm arms.
“Wait,”
A pair of hands is placed on Jongin’s shoulder as Kyungsoo leans in to give him a quick peck. Then he unlatches his hands and turns the taller male around towards his previous direction. Jongin snaps around, eyes widen and feels his jaw dropping on the ground.
He sees Kyungsoo smiling adorably while waving his hands at his direction. He blinks a few times before waving back. Jongin suppressed a happy squeal. Unfortunately he failed to realize that he’s walking backwards and crashed against a tree. The impact made him fell to the pavement unceremoniously. Kyungsoo rushed towards the static figure under the tree while holding back his laughter because Jongin is such a fail.
“Hey,” Kyungsoo pats his cheeks. “You okay?” He actually sound more amused than worried. Jongin gives a feeble smile. “Come on, get up.” Kyungsoo tugs his hands, pulling him up.
“…thanks.” Honestly Jongin feels like face palming himself because that’s so embarrassing. Falling in front of your crush is not cool.He silently wishes that he could transform into an ostrich and bury his head in the ground.
Kyungsoo grins. “Sure.”
So Jongin continues walking but then he heard Kyungsoo calling out his name so he turns around.
“Watch out for that tree!”
And Jongin finds himself got knocked down again by yet, another tree.
