video translation: Koyama and Yamapi promoting COLOR on Taiwanese TV

Jan 07, 2009 03:06

After months of hanging around fandom and feeling very guilty/useless about being unable to contribute anything other than a few shitty fics I decided to try translating this video! Because I understand the Chinese subtitles. :)

TRANSLATING IS HARD. >_< I don't know if I'm going to translate again cuz I might be more of a hindrance than a help. I'm sure some meanings were lost in the translation from Japanese to Chinese by the Taiwanese TV station, then I mangled everything terribly with my translation to English. Lol. Sorry.

ANYWAY. I'm very new to translations; before this video I might've translated a few conversations or articles randomly for relatives/friends, so I didn't know whether to follow the original as closely as possible or to translate it as I interpreted it. The result is a horrendous mish-mash of both (via rather long translator's notes. which I hope will not break up the flow of the interview too much. Ok. Who am I kidding. They will break up the flow of the interview, but I felt it necessary to clarify some stuff, so I hope you won't get too irritated.) BUT STILL I HOPE THIS IS ENOUGH TO LET YOU GET THE GIST OF THE INTERVIEW? :D?

T/N: K=Koyama, P=Yamapi

K+P: (in chinese) How are you?
K: This is NEWS' Koyama Keiichiro and
P: Yamashita Tomohisa
K: NEWS' new album "COLOR" has been released, everyone please support us!

-A song you particularly like in this album-
K: In this album, we finally recorded the song "SNOW EXPRESS" written by Yamashita Tatsuro (T/N: Thanks kairibean !) that we've performed before in our concerts. We hope that everyone will keep this song in mind this winter. We really want to return to Taiwan to perform this song.
P: We really want to go to Taiwan again ne
K: Please invite us back again!
P: The last time we held a concert in Taiwan, the audience were very energetic; this gave us strength and the motivation to return this strength/show our appreciation for it
K: It made us feel more energetic, in turn
P: We really want to show our appreciation properly to everyone, so we hope everyone will listen to "SNOW EXPRESS" and our album "COLOR", and appreciate/enjoy our music together.

[Weeeek PV, Summer Time PV]

-The meaning of the album title-
K: Talking about why we named the album COLOR...
P: Yep...
K: That's because every song really has its own special colour (T/N: There's an interesting wordplay here, cuz the word used is literally translated as "special colour" but in Chinese it can mean something's special or unique point/style..? I'm not sure how to translate this properly, sorry.) We also included our singles "Weeeek", "Happy Birthday", "Summer Time"...eh...what else? Weeeek..Happy Birthday...Summer Time...
P: (playfully/mock-sternly) You don't remember?!
K: (T/N: At this point, the subtitles read "don't remember"- no pronoun specified- but in the video, Koyama just says "ahhh", so I don't know if it's a repetition of Yamapi's line or if they "translated" the meaning behind Koyama's "ahhhh", lol.) ...and "Taiyou no Namida"! We recorded a lot of songs ne.
P: NEWS is a group with a lot of colours, we hope that every member can shine with his own special colour (T/N: The Chinese words here for "colours" and "colour" are different. The words for "colours" are the same as above, and can mean the special/unique points of something. I just interpret it as Yamapi saying that NEWS is very complex and multi-faceted. The Chinese words for "colour" on the other hand, can be used to describe something like, the feeling about a person or the way a person is due to the way he thinks. I think. ) Holding such hopes, we named the album COLOR. This album has all sorts of songs from mature songs and happy songs to ballads. We hope everyone in Taiwan will listen to it.

-How do you feel about ending the year (2008) and starting next year (2009) with concerts at the Tokyo Dome?-
K: At the end of 2008 and the start of 2009, we will be holding 3 days of concerts at the Tokyo Dome. This really makes us happy ne, because last year (2007/2008) we also held concert(s?) at the Tokyo Dome.
P: (in english) I'm so happy!
K: (in english) Happy happy! Thank you! (In japanese) Looking at the audience, we sometimes see fans holding uchiwa that read "Taiwan", and we also receive a lot of letters from our fans in Taiwan. This really makes us feel that the distance between Tokyo and the rest of Asia isn't that big. We hope that after successfully holding our concerts at the Tokyo Dome, we can return to Taiwan next year (2009)
P: Whether it's the fans in Taiwan or Asia, everyone knows English. Although it was my personal business, I chose to have my lyrics in COLOR written in English (T/N: The Chinese subtitles actually say "changed to be written in English". The "although it was my personal business" part doesn't quite make sense to me cuz it seems...confrontational? In Chinese, at least, it gave me that impression. I'm just putting it in to make it sound as close to the original as possible, but I think Yamapi is just saying that he chose to have his solo in the album, MOLA, written in English. I think he's just clarifying that it's his personal project/solo, without the other members.)
K: You did that, ne.
P: With the feeling of wanting to let fans in Asia and other parts of the world listen to it, everyone please take care of me.
K+P: Everyone, please support us

[Taiyou no Namida PV, Happy Birthday PV]

-Message to the fans in Taiwan-
K: All our Taiwanese fans, when we held concerts in Taiwan, we really felt everybody's support. In order to show our appreciation to everyone, we hope to return to Taiwan a few more times, everyone please support us. I feel that the distance between Japan and Taiwan isn't that great, so I really hope to go back to see everyone again.
P: Everyone supporting us from across the ocean (T/N: I think he means the Pacific ocean...but I'm terrible at geography so don't take my word for it, lol.) motivates us to work even harder. From now on too, we hope everyone will continue to support NEWS and grow together with us!
K: Yep!
P: So then...see you later!
K: bye bye! (In Chinese) I love you!

[Towairo no Koi, Snow Express (from the Pacific concert DVD)]

~END~

I hope that was understandable! Please watch the video, they're so cute in it, esp when they speak in Chinese or English, and when Koyama forgets "Taiyou no Namida" XDD

I know I did a terrible job, but feel free to repost or translate it into another language or whatever, if you want to. Spread the NEWS love yo XD

Oh and of course, please tell me if I made any mistakes! My Chinese could do with a lot of improvement >.<
