Are you talking about the Wii/PS2 version? I actually heard the game isn't too bad from a gameplay standpoint (though I heard the story inexplicably and unforgivably excludes all supporting characters except Tails -- even Knuckles!).
The 360/PS3 version is apparently a completely different game though, so I want to check both out. Regardless, I'm a Sonic fan, so I'll probably end up picking it up (well, one of the versions at least, depending on which is better).
As far as ever seeing good Sonic games again though, there have actually been two good ones in recent memory: Sonic Rush Adventure and Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (though the latter's got some considerably rough edges). The original Sonic Rush is also phenomenal; if you never got around to playing it, I highly recommend that you do.
I'm playing the Wii version. It isn't terrible, but it just feels like a game with an identity crisis. The stages where you're just playing as Sonic are fantastic, and sometimes they even include 2D, Genesis-style Sonic platforming, which is a wonderful throwback to the Genesis games. But that's only, at best, half of the game, because there's also stupid "Werehog" stages and retarded "detective" areas where the game almost becomes an RPG and you need to go around talking to people and sitting through their long text boxes when you SHOULD be enjoying speedy Sonic gameplay.
Almost every critique of the game that I've read has said the same thing; for a Sonic game, it is fantastic, but for a game overall, it's nothing special. I really have to agree with that statement. It's one of the better Sonic games I've played in the past ten years (actually, it might be my favorite one after SA1), but it still leaves a lot to be desired.
And yes, no sign of Tails or Knuckles or any of them so far.
Now that I can't agree to at all. Nintendo > Sega overall, for sure, but Sonic as a character owns the shit out of Mario. Sure, Mario has a much better lifetime track record in terms of game quality -- much better -- but Sonic's got more character and personality in one of his spines than I've ever seen Mario display in his entire gaming career. Super Mario Galaxy is really the first time in a long while where I can remember consciously caring about the character and his plight to take on Bowser and rescue Peach, and that's just because Nintendo did such a bang-up job of making Mario's mission feel truly epic.
It all comes down to what you care about, but game quality and caring about the characters you play are both important factors to me in the end. Thankfully, Sega's a third-party developer now, so I get the best of both worlds: Nintendo's better games, and Sega's better character.
What really sucked was when Sonic games were only available on Sega's systems, which were never really home to many games that piqued my interests

Dude im not much of a gamer, but from experience, Mario games have been the better contender. Zelda games are so boring, Final Fantasy 8 is way better than 7, and Pump is the best dance game.

Ever since they made Sonic 3D Blast, I felt like the series is going to hit its downfall from there.
