Nintendo attempts to quell the dearth of upcoming quality Wii software by announcing re-releases of both Pikmin games, Mario Power Tennis, and the first two Metroid Prime games for Q1 '09. The most noteworthy update to these re-releases seems to be the addition of Wiimote support ( Read more... )

Saying that Nintendo continuing sets a new standard for a genre every few years is really stretching it, in my opinion. I take a look at all of the sequels that we've seen in the Wii era, and the only franchise that I feel Nintendo topped their old work in is the Smash Bros. franchise (which is funny considering that most people seem to feel that Melee is the superior game). Mario Kart, Super Mario, and Zelda, the only three other Nintendo franchises that I really see as stellar, have not topped themselves, as I'll take the N64 installments (and in the case of Mario Kart, the DS installment) of those franchises over the Wii releases any day.

As far as consistent quality releases go, I'm mainly thinking about how an Xbox 360/PS3 purchase would allow me to play The Orange Box, Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, and pretty soon Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV, all games that I currently can't play because I thought that buying a Wii over the competing consoles was a good idea.

I just have to call foul with your eighth point, Ian -- MGS 4 is certainly not the only major achievement in gaming to be found on the PS3. You are very tragically forgetting LittleBigPlanet, which is nothing short of amazing.

Okay, I guess I have to wonder about one more thing, too: you can truly, honestly say with a straight face that you enjoyed Twilight Princess as much as Ocarina of Time? Really? That would mean you're also putting it on the same level as A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, and The Wind Waker, and we can't have that. :P

There's nothing stopping you (except potentially your finances) from purchasing a supplementary console.

And for what it's worth, I personally don't understand the notion that one has to play a new game every week. As someone who, during the NES' heyday, would get a new game maybe - maybe - once every six months, I'd rather bide my time with games I already have and only buy games I know are truly worthwhile, rather than run to GameStop every week to keep up with the constant deluge of Soylent Yellow they churn out.

While I believe that the 360 (not the PS3) is easily the strongest console out there and share your frustrations with Nintendo, I can't take them as far as wondering why I have a Wii in the first place.

Although they're not all AAA titles, I still have more games for my Wii than I do my 360 or PS3 (though 360 is quickly catching up), and I know I've had a lot of good times playing it. Yes, we're in a release drought right now -- and I'm becoming more and more frustrated with Nintendo and its harsh neglect of the core gamer -- but I also find myself in Ian's camp, which is knowing that when Nintendo does release a new core title in one of their primary franchises, it'll be fucking amazing. I think Nintendo outdid themselves in every way with Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3, so I can't wait to see what they have in store next ( ... )

Oh, one more thing: while I too can't help but shake my head and laugh sadly at the whole New Play Control!! re-releases of Pikmin, Pikmin 2, and Mario Power Tennis, I will say that Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2 will both benefit tremendously from Wiimote control... definitely to the point that I'd want to play them again. In my opinion, Metroid Prime 3 was a revelation control-wise.

Whoa, I think that that is a bit of an embellishment. I don't recall putting it like that when we were discussing that. I merely said that I enjoyed SM64 and Zelda OoT more than the Wii installments of those franchises. SMGalaxy and Zelda TP are both fine games.

I liked Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World for Wii. Not extremely difficult, nor long, but a fun playthrough, and enjoyable enough that I'd even consider playing it through again someday. Mario Kart is good too, if you have people to play with.

That being said, I prefer the XBox360 a lot. Nothing is quick, mindless entertainment like the Call of Duty games. Much better graphics as well. And the PS3 is good, but it was more so back when all the other Blu-Ray players (that were of same quality and didn't play games at all) were the same cost.
