A reflection on abortion

Suppose there were a young teenager who found herself pregnant. She was a good kid who didn't deserve it--she'd been as careful as could be expected, but now she was faced with the prospect of having this baby. Her support system wasn't the best. Her fiance said that he'd leave her; he claimed the baby couldn't be his. Her parents were real ( Read more... )

Do you really think your God would've knocked up a girl who planned on aborting his One-and-Only? Oh, and Mary probably did have access to some pretty nasty herbs, so if she so chose...

And you're forgetting that if your story is true, she explicitly made her choice. She could've told the archangel to go and get lost.

Not the best argument ever.

In case you haven't realized it, among all pregnancies--both the successful ones and the ones that are lost for whatever reason--there are potential world peace leaders as well as potential mass muderers and terrorists and such. Of course most of them end up in average schmucks.

Oh, and you're going to say that every girl and woman (barring rape) has this kind of choice, except that Mary supposedly knew if she said "OK" this one time, she would certainly have an illegitimate baby, and that would be it.

Oh, wow, I did not intend to sound quite this harsh. That's what happens when I get up at 5:30AM. Sorry.

It's actually a really interesting question. If the man who inspired the scriptural Jesus were aborted, how would Europe have developed? Given the oppression of the times, there would probably be some other messianic hopeful who surprised the Jews by also failing to oust the Romans, but let's say this one did something bad and public enough to remove any question of the possibility of divinity.

Would the pagan gods of the early Romans have provided adequate pretext for the unification of Europe? Would the dark ages have occurred? Would Muhammad have transcribed the words of Gabriel if Jesus had not been added to his long list of prophets? Perhaps the European royal courts would have rallied around the Islamic faith.

Hmm, perhaps if we were all pagan, we might see that not seeing eye to eye on issues is a natural condition, and not some fault of one or both parties.

Postulating an all-knowing, all-seeing God, he would've meant for the child to be aborted and either would've scrapped the plan to send his son to Earth, or chosen another woman and tried again.

If we assume God is infallible, then he would've chosen Mary because she wouldn't get the abortion.

If I recall correctly, Mary was given a CHOICE. The angel Gabriel explained what was going on and gave Mary the choice if she wanted to become pregnant. She CHOSE to get pregnant and bear Jesus.
God gave Mary a choice. He didn't want to force her to have a child that she did not want. But Mary willingly said "yes" even though she knew the ramifications.
Your scenario is a poor choice to compare to modern day.

Something tells me a direct message from your god saying your child will be savior to the world is enough to make you decide against getting an abortion.
