Funeral visitations are weird. You take away the body and have every one hold a drink and you have a party instead; a crowded room full of old neighbours, friends and relatives, who haven't seen each other for years, talking, mingling and laughing. lol and don't I know it. I have been to many Irish parties and a few Irish funerals. There was one sweet old Irish guy at this funeral. I must have over heard him say this joke ten times. "I don't drink anymore......I don't drink any less either."

So true, if you sit back and observe and these rituals, that becomes clear. But when you are a part of it, it seems so natural. These rituals work though (for most people).
