Star Wars!?!

Dec 20, 2015 23:13

So, I went and watched this obscure arthouse film you've probably never heard of yesterday. And I finally made use of that Wordpress account I started ages ago to record some hopefully non-spoilery first impressions.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I quite liked it.

Excellent! Don't think I've seen a bad review yet.

Oh, I'm sure there are people out there quibbling with various aspects (it wouldn't be the internet otherwise!) but the overall consensus does seem broadly positive - and in this instance I find myself on the side of the consensus. :)

It was a great movie. It was formulaic, predictable, and had plot holes you could fly the Millennium Falcon through (without even using the Force to steer it). But the characters were amazing: likable, well-acted, complex, and interesting. They sold the movie and made it utterly watchable. The great sets and well-paced action didn't hurt either.

You say that like it's a bad thing. :D

I agree with you completely - it was very much that sort of film, and carried completely by the characters (who were, as you say, absolutely compelling) and the actors portraying them, and by the general Star-Warsy-ness of it all, which was off the scale. I haven't enjoyed a new film that much in quite some time, although at the same time I wonder how Episodes VIII and IX (not to mention the various dodgy-sounding spinoff films planned) can possibly top it.
