The bullet went through the door at an upward angle and through his head. He may have been shot by a dwarf, someone on the ground, maybe even someone he hit with the car and knocked down.

It could have gone down like Quentin's character Mr. Brown in "Reservoir Dogs". He died from a gunshot to the head, but he still had time to drive (and crash) the getaway car before he died, so certainly someone else could have locked the damn doors before they kicked the bucket from a similar wound.
It's so obvious to me that this man was clearly a Ford Quality Assurance Manager who showed up to work in a Honda Civic. While testing the driver's seat for any foul-ups, his subordinates, riled by his betrayal, shot him where he sat and proceeded to construct the remainder of the vehicle around him. All that was left to do was to take it for a "test drive" and drop it off in Downtown Detroit. A man shot in Detroit, who would have thunk it? And everyone locks their doors while downtown. The cops don't have time for mysteries and the news media has worse stories to cover. It's the perfect crime.
