Question: Have we really become this asinine and superficial?

I just saw a news story, yet another one, on Susan Boyle. I agree with what you are saying. I think the answer to why people care so much is their own shame at having stereotyped her as soon as they saw her. The amount of publicity is likely more a result of Simon Crowell's savvy in knowing he can get a lot of viewers out of this woman's dowdiness and subsequent rise to something that is better than she was, just like the fellow that sang opera on his British show a little while back. "Better than she was" in the view of society over all, not my view. My mother is a dumpy old lady in a house dress with a beautiful voice so I think she is just fine.

I have not heard her sing because I don't want to buy into this.

I really don't think she's all the great of a singer... i heard her sing on a news show. She sang My Heart Will Go On and she BUTCHERED it. Not only did mess up nearly all the words, but she missed a few notes.. and i found myself sitting and thinking "this woman is REALLY getting that much publicity" and then I felt reassured that if she could get on to Britain's Got Talent I sure as hell can get on American Idol and i felt good about myself.
