Been on a Movie Watching Binge Lately.

  • Where the Wild Things Are - I liked it.
One might not consider it a kids' movie, maybe more a movie for grown-ups about being a kid, or perhaps a movie for adults who grew up on the book. Maurice Sendak's book is pretty sparse and light reading, even for a children's book - there aren't even a dozen whole sentences to it - so much is left up to the reader's imagination much as most of the story itself obstensiby takes place all in Max's own imagination. Spike Jonze's fleshes out Max's imagined adventures in film, and it is hardly light-hearted or cheery, it is sad, at times maybe even a little scary.

Would I take my kids (if I had any) to see it? Yes, if I were going to sit there with them at the movie, answer their questions, and talk with them about as much as they wanted afterward. It's not a "go, sit down, and be enthralled by the singing and dancing" movie. There are things in it that they will get, some that will fly over their heads, and some that they won't quite understand. If anything, though, be prepared for kids falling asleep on you or becoming bored - it is not a fast paced movie.
  • Paranormal Activity - I liked it.
I saw this in a mostly empty theater with a friend who warned me that she might dig her nails into my arm if it was too scary. I escaped with my arm intact, but my left ear was ringing a little from the screams. It's a slow buildup, but buildup of suspense is what's needed to make the film work. Oh, and when the boyfriend said he was a daytrader, I said out loud without thinking about it "Douchebag." - and was apparently right on the mark. I am going to get this one on DVD/whatever, bring it into the lab, keep all the lights off, and cover up all the windows and do a showing. Our sound isn't quite as awesome as an actual theaters, but it should suffice. Also, it's relatively sound proof.
  • Zombieland - I liked it.
I haven't had this much fun with a movie in a long time. I rank it right up there with Shaun of the Dead. Woody Harrelson slipped right into that role. Best Cameo Ever.
