I'd rather be issued a concealed weapons permit then carry openly, since concealed permits allow me to carry my gun loaded, cocked and ready. Open carry requires the magazine to be outside the gun and the chamber empty. Plus with concealed permits, you are LESS likely to attract unwanted attention and panic. Seeing a gun in a holster that could be grabbed, is far more dangerous then not seeing the gun in a concealed holster.

Why would you need to carry it cocked and ready?! Sorry, but I just don't see that kind of situation happening enough to be enough to warrant the permit. I mean, it sounds based of paranoia.......

You now live in Portland right?

Amazingly, Portland has a high number of concealed carry permits, eventually you'll run into a concealed permit carrier. Ask them why they carry, they are generally extrordinary in following the law, since they have a firearm on them and breaking the law with a firearm on their person generally equals more trouble. They are usualy super good at hiding their weapon from the public and they are super polite, ordinary people who just want to protect their own safety.

When you're being mugged, raped or see someone else in need. There isn't time to call 911, you just draw your gun and pray you don't have to shoot. It's the same for cops, you carry one and hope you don't have to use it. You can neutralize the situation, then go for safety. That's what they teach.

The LA Times is actually more conservative than most people think. It's definitely a lot more conservative than the Chronicle.
