Title: "Hocus-Pocus"
The bride, so lovely in her up-do with curling tresses. Glowing as though she carried a sunlit window in her bouquet. Shimmering fabric surrounds her in meringue swirls and twinkling stars. The irrepressible smile, balanced by smokey eyes and the crowning curve of a pearly tiara.
His tears intensify the vows.
She sings to him during their first dance. Tears may not be visible, but heartfelt words distort her perfect smile as they struggle from her throat.
Their life before was about:
“Could we?
Should we?”
Now it is a promise to weave a new life from love.

A mother beams. Face pressed to the cheek of a grinning child with a squirt of hair arcing from atop her head. The child hands her the phone, she accepts the charges. O of surprise at the discovered caller. Sticky hands help in the dishwasher, until a mystery pulls her attention under the drawer. “Dat?” she asks with an awkward point. What to do with the other fingers when you only need the one?
He takes her on Father’s Day and every other weekend.
When the pregnancy didn’t fail, he promised to be more involved; to help more. To be a better husband for the privilege of being a father.
Their life before was about:
“Can you, please?
Don’t nag!”
Now it’s about syncing calendars and loving a little life that never could have fixed the big one.
~~~
A forest-full of winged things flutters in her belly. Best jeans on, hair silky straight, a little too much liner and not a hint of blush. The family marms all praise and pet, but the primping was all for him - if he shows.
Text sent. Fate begged.
He braves the holiday and shares a meal with her.
She smiles at the way his eyes spark at his own jokes. Distracted by thoughts -- running a finger along the edge of his cheek to feel the skritch of stubble where it sneaks into his beard -- she nods in response to a question half heard.
Their lives before were about:
Work
Family
Repeat
Now it’s about harmony and fusing separate lives together with love.
Love finds us
Love leaves us
Love scares us
Love grieves us
It is the intangible everything
At times a curse, others a blessing
A phenomenon in our wiring
Love is
Nature’s sticky trick
To surviving
