LOL, "work cut out." What are you talking about?

There were a shameful number of grammatical errors in here, as well my realization of a sudden love of repeated memes. ;)

...and may be my favorite story of yours to date.

I need to sleep on this one for about a week, but I think it may be my favorite, too. As you know I love pushing my characters to various limits--but I also love that it shows us what really made Elias the man he is. I enjoy writing fluff, but I find writing these sorts of stories to be far more...compelling, I guess. Not that I plan to stop writing fluff (well, assuming I ever re-start writing it).

But then my affection for him is nearly as great as yours.

Hmm, yes. We are perhaps a bit...biased, you and I. But that's OK. *offers whisky*

The world seemed to warp around him, moments of high-speed action interspersed with time slowing to a crawl, events suddenly looking like a flip-book whose pages were turned unevenly.

I can practically see the flashes of action going off like strobes.

Elias had been double-checking their location, though, had made sure they were on the correct side of the bright red line on the map.

The readers remembering, of course, that these maps were sh*t.

He forced himself to be dispassionate as he took account of who they'd lost, made himself compartmentalise what he was seeing so he could remain effective and do everything he could-everything he'd been trained to do-to ensure the team made it out.

Poor Elias!

As he listened to Gaines calmly repeat the information, Elias suddenly found himself thinking of Ruby Quarles… If he was going to hear anyone’s voice for the last time, it should be hers.

Awww. :(

The cacophony faded away as he had a moment of perfect clarity: He loved her, no question. And he’d foolishly let her slip through his ( ... )

It helped that she knew most of the story-he'd given her his copy of the internal report into the incident shortly after he'd almost killed them coming back from Portsmouth.

Is this an incident I’m not remembering, or has this not been discussed yet?

The guilt he felt over not being more vigilant was crushing even on a good day; it was always exponentially worse in the immediate aftermath of dreaming about it.

Survivor’s guilt, indubitably - he was hardly the only man in the unit. And they had no reason to expect a Welsh contingent.

"Gaines was on the other end that day, which was probably for the best-the man is utterly imperturbable…”

I hope he’d have been able to keep it together if it actually had been Ruby on the other end; it may be for the best it wasn’t her.

"That's when I knew I was in love with you."

No pressure.

His saving grace had been having a blood type that meant he could take a transfusion from anyone.

And given the medical technology, it was like getting wounded during WWII, or maybe Korea. *sigh*

That was so beautiful! I love how you captured the two of them together in a quiet moment.

I am also re-reading TWOT and falling in love with Peter all over again!
