Let me tell you a story, a story of a man who never lied.
--
It was way back when we were in high school, I was in love with her.
“You’re staring at her again,” Yuto said to me as I absentmindedly look at her.
“I didn’t realize,” I honestly said.
“Will you confess to her?” Yuto asked me. “I could help you with that.”
It was already a year since I had feelings for her. How in love I was to her that I even follow her to this school.
“It would be the first time I would talk to her but I think I can manage,” I said to him smilingly.
--
After our class I waited till all our classmates were gone. I know she would be last to go because she always double checks if everything is in place.
“Great!” she said as she scanned the room.
“Anou--” I said still a bit anxious.
“Ah! Ryosuke-kun you’re still here,” She said to me, her face look so beautiful, like a goddess in my eyes.
“Yeah, I want to talk to you about something,” I said and look at her in the eyes. I didn’t want to distract myself so I go straight to the point. “Will you go out with me?”
“Eh?” was all she answered me then. “That’s all of a sudden--”
“I know it’s the first time I talk to you, I just wanted to let you that--” then she cut me off.
“Is this some kind of joke you boys wanted to do to me?” she asked, I can see in her eyes that she was hurting inside.
“Wait, no. I really--” I suddenly stop what I was saying then, as I saw rage in her eyes. “Please believe me.”
“Every one of you is all the same!” she said to me and started to leave the room as fast as she can.
“Wait, Mirai!” I sigh; I didn’t try to follow her then. I saw how she looked at me and I know that she’ll just hate me more if I try to follow her. “I really do love you.”
--
It was very tragic for me on how my first confession to a girl ended up.
“So you were dumped way before you could say I love you?” Yuto asked me.
“Yeah, something like that,” I said and look at Mirai then. When she caught my gaze she looked away and try to hide from her other friends. “But that doesn’t change the fact that I still love her.”
Someday I’ll be able to say it and she’ll say yes to me.
--
During our second year of high school, we were paired to make a project together. I thought it was my chance on telling her how much I love her, and even show her that.
“I’m rooting for you!” Yuto said to me, he’s a bit more positive now since he thinks that I have more confidence now.
When our class ended I immediately approached Mirai.
Expectantly, smiling while I walk to where she is. She finally saw me, she looked around looking for somewhere to hide, I know nothing still change but I will try to change it today.
“I will be your partner from now on,” I said and tried to shake her hand but I failed.
“Yeah,” was all she replied to me.
We spent weeks together, I tried to keep myself steady and make sure that we finish first this project before I confess again to her.
After some weeks, she finally loosened up to me. She started to smile and laugh at my silly jokes. I tell her my secrets, how I hated tomatoes and how I love strawberries.
There was also one time when I showed her my special skill.
“I can’t believe your singing,” she said to me as she giggled. “While cooking food, wait, that won’t kill me right?”
She pointed at the food that I was offering her. It was the food that I just made while I sang her a song or two.
“Don’t’ judge the book by its cover Mirai,” I said more confidently. If I am confident with something, that is cooking.
“If ever something happened to me, I’ll haunt you,” we both laugh on what she said. “Okay here I go.”
She took a spoonful and ate it. I was just staring at her then, I never knew how much it means to me that she would say ‘It’s delicious’ that it got so nervous.
“So how was it?” I try to keep my voice calm and not show her I’m nervous.
“It can’t kill you,” she said and took another bite. That wasn’t the answer I wanted to hear, and I know it showed to my face that I was disappointed. “It’s honestly addictive. It melts on your taste buds, and there is a sweet yet something that I can’t put my finger into that made it so tasty!”
“Really? You like it?” a small smile started to form in my lips then.
“Yes, I do,” she replied with a smile then she ate again and finish it all with warm smile on her face.
“You don’t know how relieve I am in hearing that,” I said to her but only in a whisper. “If you want I can cook another recipe, maybe next week to celebrate the project that we did?”
“That would be a great idea!” yes next week she won’t be my partner anymore. “I’m looking forward to it!”
I smiled; I’m looking forward to it to, to confessing to you.
--
A week passed and yes this is the day I will confessed to her for the second time.
Of course I never lead her to the fact that I lost interest in her. I showed it to her every time but I don’t think she noticed it.
I prepare tiramisu for her this time. It took me a lot more time to do it perfectly but I’m pretty sure she’ll love it.
“Ryosuke!” she said waving at me. “Sorry the meeting took longer than I thought it would be.”
“That’s okay I didn’t wait long,” it was the truth, I really thought I was late as well. “You look great by the way.”
“Sometimes I believe you,” she said with those sceptical eyes of hers. “You’re such a great liar Ryosuke.”
But I never lied, I never anything especially to her.
“I’m an honest guy, I wouldn’t dare lie to you,” I answered her trying to tell her I would never lie to her no matter what.
“Everyone in this world lies,” she said confidently like she was pursuing I admit defeat.
“Maybe, it depends. There might be a person who’s good at lying to other people but there will always be someone in his or her life that he/she would be honest,” please do understand my feelings more I thought to myself as I look at her.
“Alright, anyway where my food,” Mirai asked me as she peeked inside the paper bag I was holding. “Tiramisu!”
“I hope you’d like it,” I opened the container and let her eat the tiramisu I made.
After some moment I finally open up the topic.
“Do you believe in me?” she looks at me then with questioning eyes. “If I say I never lie to you?”
“Hmm… Let me see,” she said still playful as always. “Maybe,”
That answer is enough for me.
“Then, without any lies, without any jokes implied. MIrai, I love you,” I smiled gently then as if everything will okay. “Will you be my girlfriend?”
Right after I said that her eyes suddenly become blank, as cold as ice.
“That lie again,” she finally said. “I thought it’s going to be okay between us. No more of that lie, but I guess I’m wrong.”
“Mirai, I’m not lying to you,” I raised my voice then. She needs to know that I care. “I never lied to you.”
“Didn’t I tell you, everybody lies,” she said and stood up. “Even this friend was just a lie.”
Right after that day, she started not to talk to me again. The only difference of it from before, it feels colder, her eyes; it feels colder than before.
--
Our graduation is today, I never thought that three years could passed by that fast.
It’s been a long time since I talk to her, but still even though she kept avoiding me these past few years I’m still in love with her.
That would never change, no matter what.
Everyone was already saying their goodbyes to one another, some were crying out of joy, some were trying to cool, some are crying because of separation.
I frowned then, it’s now or never. This would be my last chance.
I approached her then, even though she tried to ignore I don’t really care anymore. I don’t care if the whole class hear about my confession.
“I love you Mirai,” when I said all the noise in the classroom suddenly faded. “You might say I’m not telling the truth, I don’t mind if you still believe that I’m lying. But let me tell you this, all these years I only one girl and that girl’s name is Shida Mirai,”
I paused and took a deep breath.
“No matter how much you push me away, I’ll keep on coming back. That’s how much I love you,” I finally said it. I smiled gently, as warm and sincere as I could. “I’m the one for you, Mirai. I’m the man who’ll never lie and hurt you.”
“What with that--” she said half smiling and half pissed. “Saying those stuffs, you’re going away right? Leaving Japan, and you’re telling me those things? I can’t believe how good you are with lying.”
“I know I’m leaving but that doesn’t change anything. I’ll write to you, every single day I’m away,” a tear was trying to fall out then. “I promise you won’t even feel I’m gone.”
Right after that confession I left the school building.
--
It’s been eight years since then.
I’m still writing to her, every single day, telling her how much I love her, how much I miss her.
I don’t mind that she never replied to me, because knowing that she’s reading my letters are enough for me.
Dear Mirai,
This would be the last time that I would write to you…
Because I’m going back to Japan! I’m a doctor now by the way.
Seeing you after a long time, don’t laugh if I cry okay?
I can’t wait to see you.
- Ryosuke
--
A week after I send my last letter, I went and board a plane. I’m coming home.
When I arrived at the airport I called Yuto immediately.
“Ryosuke you’re back!” he said to me happily on the other line.
“Yeah, I’m glad to be back,” Is said to him. “Where are you at by the way?”
“I’m at my apartment actually,” he said to me a bit hesitant. “Do you want to come over?”
“Yeah sure. Give me the address,” I said and look for a pen and paper then as I wrote down Yuto’s address. “Okay I got it! See you soon!”
When I arrive at the building he gave me, I immediately called him but then he wasn’t answering so I looked at the text message he gave to me earlier.
Here’s the password to my apartment. Just in case I’m not answering my phone or the door bell.
I then typed the password and his door opened then.
I tried to enter quietly as I heard voices. Maybe he was busy, he did told me he’s living with his girlfriend. I’m really excited to know the girlfriend of my best friend.
When I’m almost at the living room, I finally stop as I heard a thud.
“That really hurts,” Yuto said but then I heard that they both laugh. I took a look and saw Yuto kneeling down in one knee, I still didn’t get the chance to see the girl since the pillar is blocking her. “Will you marry me?”
“Yes!” she said happily.
Oh my! My best friend’s getting married! When Yuto stood up I immediately showed myself.
“Congratulations!” I said happily. Yuto was shock seeing and my smile started to fade away as I saw the girl in front of me.
“Ryosuke,” Mirai said shocked seeing me here. “I thought you’re still in the US?”
“I took an earlier flight,” I replied as I tried not to cry.
“Ryosuke, hear me out--” Yuto said and tried to approached me. I backed away and glared at him.
“It’s okay. Its eight years! I’m away for eight years--” of course everything’s change. Why did I expect she’ll be waiting for me? I’m too full of myself.
“Ryosuke, please listen to me,” Mirai finally said. I forced a smile then ad cut she was saying.
“I can never lie to you,” that’s the truth. “I loved you, but it’s eight years Mirai, I changed too.”
I changed and be a better man for you.
It was as if I’m torturing myself right now, but I have to do this.
“Yuto’s lucky to have you. He’s a great guy,” I know that they can hear that my voice is already cracking. I’m already at my limit but I need to tell her this. “I’m happy for both of you!”
That was my first lie. My first lie to you Mirai.
I gave her an assuring smile then after that I took my bag and left Yuto’s apartment.
--
I ran as fast as I could and when I got out of the building my tears started to fall.
“Ah!” I heard someone screamed a little. I looked to my side to see that I stumbled to someone.
“I’m sorry,” I offered my hand then. “I didn’t mean to-I mean I’m just not myself today.”
“It’s okay. Are you alright?” she asked me concerned, this stranger right here was concerned about me even though she doesn’t know a thing on who I am. “My best friend’s going to get married to the girl I love.”
It came out as if I’m telling it to my mother, after the tears kept running down. That girl gave me a warm hug that I will never forget.
--
I decided to go back to the states then. There’s nothing for me here, I have no reason to stay.
I woke up, I never thought that I would stay here for only a week. Today I’m going back to the US.
I started to pack my bags and then my doorbell rang.
I opened my door and someone was there standing there holding a big box. I looked up to see the person’s face.
“What are you doing here Mirai?” I feel like my chest is tightening more.
“You’re such a liar,” she finally said. I looked at her and she looks so hurt. “You said you’re the one for me and now you’re leaving again?”
“You’re getting married Mirai, to my best friend,” I reminded her but it pains me to say that.
“Giving me all those letters, writing to me every single day for eight years and you gave up like that?” a sudden tear fell down her cheeks then I wanted to wipe it away but I can’t because I do I might not let go of her.
“Yuto’s my best friend, and I love you, so--” she then cut me off.
“Stupid!” she said to me and let go of the box she was holding. “What kind of a stupid person are you? Lying that you’re happy for both of us, you do know you’re such a bad liar.”
“I thought you said I’m good at lying?” I said.
“And believe that?” she covered her face then. “The one that I love is you. I was never going to get married to Yuto.”
“What?” I said surprised. “Did Yuto know?”
“We’re together stupid!” she said to me as she look me in the eyes. “How can I be together with him when they guy that I love is right here?”
“Yuto said he’s living with her girlfriend,” I said then.
“Yes, he is living with his girlfriend named Ohgo Suzuka. He was just practice what he will do when Suzuka would came in, I told him I could help him be more romantic,” that name. It sounded familiar. “I can’t believe you making me feel this way.”
Then it suddenly it connected. “Can I know your name?” I asked the girl who hugged me earlier.
“It’s Ohgo Suzuka,” she replied to me.
“So you’re telling me that -that I was mistaken?” I don’t want to laugh but I can’t the smile in my face then. “You said you love me? You do?”
“Who wouldn’t be,” Mirai finally said. “Any girl would love a guy like you.”
I ruffled my hair then as I now realized how stupid I was and here I am sulking for a week thinking my best friend took away the love of my life.
“Stupid,” she muttered. I looked at her, she was still crying then, I wiped away the tears from her cheeks.
“You can’t take back what you said, I recorded it in my head already,” I said and smiled. She smiled back and nodded to me.
I leaned closer to her as I put my lips on hers. Then our love was sealed.
--
Oh! If you guys are wondering, No, I didn’t go back to the states. I literally ripped my plane ticket into pieces. I unpacked my things and put it to where it should be.
After six months of dating the love of my life, we moved in together. After two years I asked her to marry me and guest what she said yes right away.
On our wedding day I vowed to her that no matter what I will never lie to her, even though it’s selfish of me I will tell only and nothing but the truth as I live together with her for the rest of my life.
And that’s my story. The story ofman who never lied.
