This morning I was looking forward to staying in bed for an hour or so after Dennis got up and left for work. Alone in the house, lying in bed, I suddenly heard a thumping from my wall. The third or fourth time I heard it, I dragged my butt out of bed and grabbed a flashlight. The first place I looked was the crawlspace in my room just beneath the eaves. There was nothing there, but the noise continued. I remembered that there is a vent in the attic just above our bedroom. Sucking up the mild claustrophobia, I climbed the ladder into the attic. Normally there is a screen covering the vent, preventing the birds from getting into the attic proper. However, they do tend to nest just inside the vent itself. I went towards the thudding noise. Sure enough there was a sparrow nest with three hatchlings crying for their parent. The nest was made primarily of grasses, but also contained more "human" components... ribbon, dental floss... What looked like dental floss was loose from the nest, and looped around the neck of the daddy sparrow. He
