i did that to my keyboard once. the "key" is to immediately turn it upside down - even before trying to wipe it off. just for your information - it's even worse when it is the keyboard of your laptop.

hope things work well for your mother. i got told this week i do not need knee replacements yet - i can put it off for as much as a year or two.
