I wouldn't sweat the Tenderloin too much. It's the victimless crime part of town more than anything else. Meaning, someone will probably offer you drugs and a transsexual prostitute will almost certainly offer you a BJ, but the odds of you being fatally stabbed are low.

Speaking from the living-in-SF experience, I can tell you that living someplace where you can walk to work isn't enough to make you lose a lot of weight, but it definitely doesn't hurt.

It sounds like your life is coming together nicely again, and that's cool.
