Quick question -- selling craft items

I made a felt caddy to hold Katie's colored pencils while she's coloring in church so they don't go clattering all over the stone floor, and a friend saw it and asked me to make some for her niece and nephews.  Specifically, she offered to pay me to make them.  I'm not generally comfortable selling my crafts, but the more I make and the better I ( Read more... )

I've never sold my handcrafted stuff--partly, I tend to like making things that take much time to do, so I like to have them afterwards. If someone asked I'd say that this is my hobby, and doing it for pay reduces the pleasure of it for me.

The pencil rolls look very nice, by the way!

If you don't want to sell your crafts because it just wouldn't be fun if you were doing them for money, that's perfectly legitimate; my uncle loved woodworking, started a woodworking business, and discovered very quickly that if he was doing woodworking as a JOB, that it was no longer fun. He went back to the desk job for pay and woodworking for fun, and quickly came to love it again. On the other hand, I also know a ton of people who sell their crafts, and at the very least find it a good way to make their yarn addiction self-sustaining ( ... )
