Bad New Games, AKA "Steam"

Relic has developed a lovely game in Dawn of War 2. Unfortunately, that lovely game is packaged inside a turd known as Steam. I've never gotten a game from Steam before, but I decided to just buy online because playing Dawn of War 2 requires a connection to Steam to play ( Read more... )

I'm going to send a complaint to Relic in the (probably) vain hope that they'll pay attention. If I'd known how bad Steam was, I probably wouldn't have bought now.

Ultimately, we as PC game developers want to be paid for our games, and we have only two options: we can do some kind of irritating and intrusive DRM bullshit, or we can ask you to have an internet connection.

Sorry, but I'm calling bullshit on that argument. As a PC game developer, you should be completely aware that with less than a day of labor, any game can be cracked and have all of its copy protection removed. It doesn't matter if the security in question is Steam, SecureRom, or something else. People who want to steal an offline game can do so by downloading it for free with no DRM.

In short, copy protection should be there to keep honest people honest but not intrude upon them. Steam, well, it intrudes upon me.
