I mentioned before that I'm looking to add to my music collection. I just bought these:

  • The Very Best of John Coltrane
  • Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture; Capriccio Italien; Romeo & Juliet; Francesca da Rimini
  • Frank Sinatra: Nothing But The Best

I also like the Romantic era in classical music. If you don't have them already, I'd highly recommend:
  • Dvorak: Symphony no. 9 "For a New World" (or "The New World Symphony")
  • Smetana: The Moldau (or "Vltava")

For jazz, my personal feeling is that John Coltrane is very abstract and intellectual and less aesthetically pleasant than intellectually challenging. I personally like Clifford Brown - same era, but a little more well-rounded. Check out the "Best of the Mercury Years" two-disc set; preview a couple to see if you like it first, though.

Another great jazz album is "Time Out" by Dave Brubeck. You probably already know "Take 5", but the others on this album are quite catchy too.

For newer jazz, try Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band.
