On FB, the question was asked if that doesn't mean that $10K should still go into the prize pool.

WSOP can give the discount if it wants, but it should come out of their pockets and not the players'.

Heh, while I don't necessarily think Harrah's actually should be obligated (in some sense) to have more money in the prize pool than what was paid by the players, it's pretty lame and misleading for them to use the word "discount".

i.e. suppose this structure deters all men from playing, and 500 women sign up for the tournament. If the prize pool is only 500 x 1k (minus rake), in what way did women meaningfully get a "discount" from 10k if the prize pool was "discounted" in a commensurate fashion?

If Harrah's claims they are giving women a discount but only 1k instead of 10k goes into the prize pool, it would be like some restaurant saying "We want to honor veterans, so veterans get 50% off for beer tomorrow!" and then when a veteran comes in and orders a beer, it is 50% cheaper but it's also only a half pour.
