just a little bit of advice.... livejustin November 10 2003, 20:59:58 UTC
going to church will never be enough, even if it is more than once a week. what you need is prayer and time in your bible. also, I know some people, including myself at times, tend to live life as it's convenient- meaning they live like Christians when it's easy to live like a Christian, and when it's not easy to live like a Christian, they live just like everyone else. that is no way to have a relationship with God. that's makes those people either lukewarm Christians or simply sunday Christians (I'm not saying you, im just generally speaking). so basically, the three tips to growing a better, closer relationship to God is to keep your prayer life active(you could write books about how to do that better, but i'll leave it there) read your bible (it's shocking how many people consider themselves Christians, but don't even know what is written in the book that God gave us to know him by. trust me by my own experience, reading your bible is, in a lot of ways, like working out. it's hard to get started, but when you do it regularly, you ( ... )

What about the Bibles numerous revisions? History has shown us that the Bible has been revised several times to fit the 'guidelines' of a major ruler. Are you reading the King James version? Can we be sure it's the true word of God? Objective thought is healthy when it concerns things like religion. - A friend

hey, good question. livejustin November 11 2003, 16:29:05 UTC
well, It seems to me that you have the King James version in mind. I admit there may have been some errors in the original King James translation, perhaps due to the "guidlines of a major ruler" but wouldn't that mean the "numerous revisions" would be a good thing? (the revisions, made in 1612, 1613, 1616, 1629, 1638, 1660, 1683, 1727,1762, 1769, and 1873, were corrections in translation errors found. I'm not sure of King James' lifespan, but I doubt you can accredit all of these revisions as new attempts to meet his "guidlines" -i might be missunderstanding you on this) I personally don't read from the King James version, and I don't recommend it because of the slight errors in translation (I'm not aware of any 'major' problems in the translation, if you know of any, let me know) and also because of the language being generally hard to read. but try a the New American Standard version, which is probably the most literally accurate english translation, and the NIV is probably the second most that I know of. there's a lot to be said ( ... )

The purpose for all the new translations is to keep the text accurate with todays language. That is why The King James Translation is actually one of the worst translations to read. The language at the time that the King James Bible was translated has changed. Words have slightly differant meanings, rules have changed... As long as you are reading a newer translation that was translated from the origional text (any respectable "translation," not a paraphrased Bible) it will be about as close as you can get without actually knowing Greek and Hebrew. Also, each translation was translated with a specific purpose in mind, so that should be taken into consideration.

Oh yeah, and about the objective thinking thing... True. I agree that objective thinking is good for anything as long as it is open minded.

Some thoughts from the mind of a fellow struggling Christian...

There are a few things that I know can seperate you from God. One of them, like Justin said, is lack of fellowship with God. Another thing, a thing that I think plays a huge role in your ability to communicate/fellowship with God, is allowing sin in your life. Life has no fellowship with darkness. In order to let God in we have to push sin out. This is super hard for a lot of people because we have what is called "cherished sins." That would be a sin that we know is there but we don't want to let go of. One thing that also effects me is my fellowship with others. If I spend a lot of time with nonChristians I feel spiritually drained. Without edifying fellowship with other Christians, my mind gets filled with other things, and I lose focus on God.

Just a few little things I thought might be decent suggestions. if you ever wanna chill, call me up.
