Patreon

A number of author friends are doing Patreon, and I wanted to find out if it was a good idea for me to. How it works is this: Patreon subscribers pledge a small amount per month, as little as $1, to subscribe to my Patreon website. They have exclusive access to new stories, sketches and chapters from works in progress each month -- it's kind of ( Read more... )

I think all of those levels are reasonable. I just clicked on the one that I personally felt comfortable about committing to, for now.

I support several Patreon people. I quite enjoy the perks (if there are any) and the knowledge that I'm helping creators whose work I enjoy.

I'm relatively well-off and from an economic standpoint I should probably be donating the equivalent amount money to registered charities instead, but I prefer to donate more...personally, if that makes sense.

I think donating personally, especially in arts giving, makes a lot of sense. Having spent many years working in nonprofits, the further the donor from the recipient, the less actual money reaches the recipient. Giving to a community foundation that in turn gives money to arts agencies which in turn gives money to artists means that actually less than a quarter of the original gift reaches the artist. The rest pays for the layers of overhead. Giving as directly as possible makes the most impact. (And this is true in other giving besides arts. I currently do some work for a small community organization that works with the homeless and the food insecure, and most of the money actually reaches the recipients, unlike when I worked for a big national organization.)

My resistance is mainly to the idea of getting yet another account, but I do appreciate how Patreon is not tied to a specific project like Kickstarter, so better for writers, and I will probably get a Patreon account at some point.

I've hesitated to start a Patreon, but I think what I like best is just that -- unlike Kickstarter, it's not about a particular project but about the ongoing work.

I've been off-line for a while, and I see you've already decided to go ahead, but I thought I'd add my input anyway. I look forward to adding you to the list of people I'm supporting.
