OOC: All About Joan

Aug 26, 2008 09:35

Joan Girardi is your average, ordinary seventeen year old girl. She lives in the town of Arcadia, Maryland, with her mother, an art teacher, her father, a sheriff's detective, her older brother, Kevin, who is in a wheelchair, and her younger brother, Luke, who is a huge geek. She has boy problems and is struggling to find her place in the world.

Oh, and God talks to her.

Joan's family moves to Arcadia about a year prior to her coming to Fandom when her father gets a job as the Chief of Police. Her brother, Kevin, is in a car accident that leaves him a paraplegic and the family is still trying to adjust to this drastic life change. Joan and Luke have to start attending Arcadia High, where they try to fit in.

And then Joan has some weird dreams. She thinks she is seeing someone standing in the front yard, looking into her bedroom window. Later that day, a cute boy approaches her at school and tells her that He is God and that He needs to her to something for him. Joan is skeptical, but ends up doing what he asks and realizes that her actions have a positive impact on the rest of her family.

Each subsequent episode features God appearing to Joan in any number of guises and asking her to do something. Though she never quite understands why she's doing it, there is always some sort of positive outcome - thwarting a school shooting, finding her injured father, helping a homeless girl, etc. Her tasks are always random and not directly related to what she ends up accomplishing, however: joining cheerleading to find a girl who dumped her baby in a dumpster, starting to build a boat to give her handicapped brother a hobby, etc.

In the season one finale, Joan falls ill and is diagnosed with Lyme disease. She learns that one of the rare symptoms of the disease is hallucinations and begins to suspect that her conversations with God weren't real. God doesn't appear to her to refute this assumption and her parents end up sending her to camp for the summer.

Joan is coming to Fandom instead of going back to Arcadia High after spending the summer at "crazy camp." She's ready for a fresh start, away from her family and friends who think that she's mentally unbalanced.

Unfortunately, not only will Fandom serve to make her think she is still crazy or crazier, God will start showing up again to give her tasks. This means that Joan will effectively be a walking plot device. If you need someone to complete some totally random task or to make a connection between two character who otherwise don't know each other or discover some arcane object or obscure factoid? Joan is your girl. Even smaller character things, like getting involved in an activity or taking a class or going on a trip or whatever. If there is a need for a catalyst, I'm happy to volunteer Joan to help.

Of course, Joan won't tell anyone why she's doing these things. Partly because God frowns on her sharing and partly because she doesn't want people to think she's insane. Of course, when Joan isn't on a mission from God, she really will come across as your average, ordinary teenager girl.

In canon, God appears to Joan in numerous guises throughout both seasons and even in multiple forms in one episode. For the sake of my icon space and sanity, I'll be sticking to a few of the more iconic representations of God that have appeared and maybe some random Getty Images people. I will try not to use anyone that has been featured in any other game canon, but PLEASE let me know if I do so I can change it.

Also, though other people will see the forms that God takes to speak with Joan, they should not recognize His true nature, as he will be disguising it. If you have a character that canonically can see gods, please talk to me. Of course, characters are welcome to ask Joan about all the random people who they don't recognize that she talks to. God also will not be interacting with anyone except for Joan. And all of Joan's conversations with God will be NFB in the sense that the radio squirrels shouldn't recognize God, though reporting that Joan was talking to some cute boy who told her she should volunteer to TA for a sparkly vampire is totally okay.

I think that's everything. If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or shoot me an email :D
