Here are some photos from the roadtrip I took with Lauren this weekend. We went to Providence and then up to Fairhaven in Massachusetts where we hung out with Conrad and his shipmates ON HIS SHIP. A ship with masts and riggings and everything. It was super cool fun. I will tell more with photos and captions!
Friday:
So when were sitting in traffic in Connecticut (for like thirty miles) we were behind this truck, which I was thought was funny, so I took a photo while driving. I think some of the people in cars around me were giving me funny looks because of that.
When we got to Providence we drove around for about seriously two hours because we were looking for a holiday inn which was on our map. But it wasn't there. After driving for all that time we figured out that the map was wrong and there is a HILTON in that spot and not a Holiday Inn. WTF, map.
This is the hotel we stayed in on friday night. As you can tell, it's pretty boring and in a motel 6. It had very high ceilings, though.
Saturday:
On Saturday after checking out of out hotel, we went to Federal Hill in Providence and ate some fancy pizza which was pretty good but not really pizza at all. Providence was stormy and the streets were empty in that part of town.
Lauren, at the fancy pizza place.
Me, at the fancy pizza place.
So after we drove around and did some shopping and whatnot, we drove up to Fairhaven, MA where we met up with Conrad and his shipmates. We were waiting for Conrad to come meet us annnnnd we saw a man! in the riggings! of a ship! I took a photo.
Maybe I took more than one photo. :D
OK, so then Conrad came and we walked to his ship which I can't remember the name of. ETA: (I remembered it! The Shenandoah. It's owned by the guy who owns
The Black Dog Tavern Co, who was kind of a very strange man.) :\ The guy in riggings was one of the fellow deckhands. I kind of felt like a weird stalker for taking photos of him before I even met him. OMG DUDE, SAILORS ARE STINKY. They had been hoisting a yard (the horizontal spar that sails are hung from) that day which is pretty strenuous annnnd yeah, the were very very stinky.
So we got on the ship (which I will describe in a moment) and then we decided that for dinner we were going to make pad thai, so a trip to the supermarket was necessary. The boys were all really excited to drive there instead of riding bikes. We also went to the liquor store where we bought guiness and rum. lolz rum. Those boys are such stereotypes.
So after DELICIOUS pad thai, guiness, rum and getting off the ship at high tide to go pee (which isn't easy) we went to bed.
This is where I slept. The only light in the room was from the sunlight coming in through a glass orb which was embedded in the deck and went into the little rooms.
This is the stuff that was next to me when I slept.
Sunday:
Lauren on deck, on an anchor.
An old, carved pulley.
Lauren checking out the wheel.
Adam, Lauren and Todd?. Adam was really cool, Todd (if that's hid name or not, we're not sure) not so much.
Me, on deck.
Me and Conrad, on deck.
Fishing ships.
Ok, SO there was a gang plank on this ship, but it was like a foot wide and wobbly and scary. So we climbed the chains that were attached from the hull to the bowsprit instead. See photos below.
Mind you, we did this while drinking. At high tide you had to jump down onto the pier. It was serious business.
The shipyard house with a hardcore ship behind it called Friendship.
We went to a brewery with Conrad and Adam called Buzzard's Bay. We had to wait like fifty minutes for the tour, so we went for a walk in the field behind the brewery.
A TURTLE!!
So we went on the tour, there was a really cute doggie named Tigger. And sampled from beers, some of which were pretty good. I didn't like their Pilsner, which felt like heresy since I am Czech, but whatever. At the end of the tour they mentioned that they also own a vineyard, which also does tours and tastings, so we went there too and did another tour and drank wine. :D
Lauren and Adam laying in the grass at the vineyard.
Lauren, Adam and Conrad, laying on the ground.
After the vineyard we got burgers on portugese rolls at a restaurant on the water and then we drove the boys back home. Then hit the road to come back to NY which was an easy trip.
Fin.
