When people said that last time around, I dismissed them as paranoid, but now ... hmmm.

I don't actually literally believe that.

My god I'm so fucking sick of hearing this argument, I can't believe I'm hearing it from you.

Um, if democrats don't want Ralph Nader siphoning off 5% of their voting base, maybe they should say something OTHER THAN the status fucking quo on The War on Drugs, NAFTA/WTO, the ABM treaty, The Patriot Act, the Kyoto accord, H1-B visas, the electoral college system, the death penalty, and a dozen other issues where democrats are indistinguishable from the GOP.

The argument that Nader is somehow responsible for Bush's win in 2000 only holds water if you accept on faith that everybody who voted for Nader would've:
1) Actually voted in 2000, had Nader not run instead of staying home
2) voted for Gore

Never mind the fact that GORE CARRIED FUCKING FLORIDA, so what are we talking about.

To quote Nader, the political process is not a gated community.

Yes, yes, yes. I agree with all that. I don't think he's responsible for Bush's "win." I do think he's WAY more interested in his own self-aggrandisement than in the good of the country. I think he likes to talk a good line, but it's really all about him. If I believed for a second that he was sincere, I would have way less rage over this.

If the guy REALLY wanted to effect change in this country, he wouldn't siphon off support for the Democratic candidate, thereby giving the election to McCain. As strategy goes, it's pretty fucking stupid.

I liked Obama's response, which was that anybody should be able to run for President, and it's the Dem Party's responsibility to be so attractive to voters that they win regardless of who runs against them. I agree with that, and I think it's the right attitude for a candidate to have. I'm still pissed at Nader.

That's an excellent response on the part of Obama ( ... )

Ralph Nader is an utter asshole for running. This is the guy who pops up every 4 years to complain about corporate power but spends the intervening years utterly silent. Where was he when the government suspended habeus corpus or started spying on their own citizens without warrants or fucked up so royally in New Orleans? Where was he when the White House outed an undercover CIA officer? Where was he when we went to war on incredibly flimsy evidence? Hell, where was he - who is supposed to be so interested in consumer protection - when the definition of "organic" was getting so watered down as to be meaningless, or when kids were getting toys with lead paint or the family dog was chowing down on anti-freeze? Oh, that's right. Nowhere ( ... )
