Turning back for home

Finally the block has lifted and some new fic! It's actually three drabbles connected by a single thought.

Title :  Turning back for home
Author : Joans23
Paring : Dean, Sam/Jess
Rating : PG
Prompt : None. I totally stole

jacoba06's idea of writing an AU fic with Dean as a fireman.

The mask fits tightly around his face, the only sound in his ears is his own recycled breath. The curve of the lense distorts his already limited vision. He knows it’s impossible, but he can almost taste the thick acrid smoke on his tongue. Just like he did 22 years ago. The fireproof overall makes it hard to move, keeps trying to weigh him down, but well trained muscles push on. Maybe he wasn’t born for this, maybe his life could have been different, but right now it fits. It’s the only job he will ever be really good at.

We couldn’t save you, but I’ll save him.

He keeps telling himself it’s just another day on the job. There is no reason his hands should be shaking or his heavy heart thudding slowly in his restricted throat. But it’s not. He knew that from the moment the call came through at the station. It was Sammy’s address. At first they wanted him to stay behind, he was too close to this one. But one look at his haunted eyes and fixed jaw quickly put an end to that and he’s the first one inside. He turns away from the fear, around the corner and into Sam’s bedroom.

We couldn’t save you, but I’ll save him.

He doesn’t know what he expected, but it definitely wasn’t to find Jessica pinned to the ceiling, white hot flames consuming her body right before his eyes. Just like 22 years ago. Sam is pinned to the bed by the heat, frozen in terror, his unbelieving eyes not looking away, screaming her name over and over. When he calls to him, Sam doesn’t or can’t hear him. Without hesitation Dean steps into the inferno, grabs Sam and starts dragging him out. Sam is fighting him, he doesn’t want to leave her there, burning, dying. He doesn’t want to be saved.

We couldn’t save you, but I’ll save him.
