Well, we took all Thursday afternoon to go the the SPCA and pick out two kittens. (Long tedious process since there were lots of other adopters). They are of course not a replacement for Mymble who died last week--could never do that!--but we figured it was good not to let Spark start to assume she was an only cat and queen of the house. Well, she can still be queen of the house but she has to accept some ladies-in-waiting! We were going to adopt a brother-sister pair of black kittens who were so cute together, but after waiting for our turn finally learned that since they couldn't neuter them yet, but couldn't trust them not to become pregnant one by the other before they were old enough for the operation, they would not let us adopt them as a pair! I totally understand, but wish the attendants who helped us at the cages would have told us that! We had to put our names at the end of the list again (luckily this time only after 2 people) and go pick out another one. So we have a fluffy gray tiger and a sleek black kitten--both about 8 weeks old. The attendant assured us they'd happily adopt each other as companions and not pine for their littermates--seems to be true. Doodle has never had kittens before and can hardly stay away--he is in gales of giggles at their silly play.
The gray tiger is named Little My. Little My is the youngest sister of the Mymble in the Moomin books--since she's stripy like Mymble was it seemed appropriate. Doodle wanted to name her Mymble II but I just couldn't do that. I know she will make us seem silly by growing up huge and regal and the name Little My will be totally inappropriate. So be it! We can call her just My then. The black kitty is Poppyseed (Doodle's cousin just named a kitten Pumpkinseed, and Doodle loves poppyseed bagels!)
Although I wrote a mini-memorial for Mymble on the
kittypix site, I haven't yet written one for here. I still plan to. I miss her so much but right now the memories of her last days, very sick and feeble, are laid over the fullness of her life and I need to be able to get past that to be able to write from my heart.
The silliest of the new pictures, from when Doodle was dangling a string for them:
