Young Glasgow violinist heads for Trinidad and Tobago
Fiona Robertson, from Jordanhill in Glasgow, who is a pupil at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, will perform at a concert in Larbert West Church on Saturday 22nd August at 7.30pm. Fiona has just completed her GCSEs at Chetham’s, where she is studying violin under Jan Repko, and piano with Marta Karbownicka.
The aim of the concert is to raise money to help fund Fiona’s participation in the bi-annual Commonwealth Resounds project to be held in Trinidad and Tobago in November 2009, whilst the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting takes place.
Participants are encouraged to raise funds to help cover the cost of the trip, and so far, Fiona has raised £800 out of the total anticipated cost of £1,500. A share of the proceeds will go to Strathcarron Hospice, a cause championed by Fiona’s grandmother, June McKinnon, who is the conductor of the Strathcarron Singers, a choir formed by former staff to raise funds for the hospice.
Fiona has been selected, along with several other students from Chetham’s, to be part of a large delegation of young musicians from schools and colleges in the UK to take part in the event. The group will perform for the Commonwealth delegates and give musical workshops in local schools and hospitals throughout the week.
At this year’s Glasgow Music Festival, Fiona won the Ailie Cullen Memorial Prize for the most outstanding performer, playing a movement from "Symphonie Espagnole" by Lalo.
In addition to playing her violin, Fiona will also play pieces on oboe and piano and the concert will also feature Amy Westwell, one of her classmates at Chetham’s, playing clarsach, along with Fiona’s cousin, Rachel Auld, who was a finalist in the 2007 BBC Young Chorister of the Year competition and Fiona’s younger brother, Alasdair, who is a member of the RSNO Junior Chorus. Accompanists will be Robert Simans and Pat Main.
Although there is no admission charge, voluntary donations in aid of the Commonwealth Resounds Project and Strathcarron Hospice will be welcomed.
Katie, Fiona is Alan's daughter.
