My Mum took 5 years off work for both me and my sister i.e. until we went to school and she says she wouldn't change a thing. Sure, they had to struggle financially, they never had a big house and their car was a banger, but she got to spend lots of time with us, and made sure that we were brought up the way she wanted. As far as she was concerned, her home life was far more important than her work life, so she didn't see it as a sacrifice. On the other hand, there was a news story recently about a French MP who went back to work a couple of days after giving birth and got straight back on with helping to run the country. She said that she was more than happy to make this choice and didn't see what all the fuss was about ( ... )

I think going part time for a few months is a compromise, but I also think it's the best available option. We'll see how it goes in any case.
