The New Orleans city council just approved plans to demolish four huge public housing developments in the city. It was a difficult and controversial decision, but one that had to be made. The plans are mostly for mixed income apartment and townhouse-type communities, with lots of greenspace. In the meantime, there are about 800 subsidized housing units currently vacant and available, and vouchers available for private apartments.

I don't mean to sound cold about it. I really do symapthize. It's a very dangerous city, and those developments are incredibly concentrated violent crime areas. Thousands of people have lived in the same place for generations. They know the players, the games, and basically how to stay alive. They're afraid of the unknown, like we all are. We just have an unprecedented opportunity to make the city a whole lot safer for everyone, and we can't pass it up.
