Non-fiction:
Naomi Klein - No Logo
Levitt and Dubner - Freakonomics: A Rogue economist explores the freak side of everything
Steve Hofstetter - Student Body Shots (this is for a lighter note)
Morgan Spurlock - Don't Eat this Book

Fiction:
Dan Brown - Digital Fortress
James Patterson - any of the Alex Cross novels (Cat's Cradle is excellent)
Margaret Atwood - Handmaid's Tale, Oryx and Crake, and Blind Assassin are all great

i can only think fiction right now:

one hundred years of solitude by gabriel garcia marquez
white teeth or the autograph man by zadie smith
fall on your knees by ann marie mcdonald
american psycho by brett easton ellis (this is a hard one to get through though if you've got a problem with the grotesque)
