Why is it when companies offshore engineering talent because it's cheaper that's the global economy, but if I want to import some CD, DVD, software, or bit of hardware that same company makes because they sell it cheaper over there, that's just not allowedIf companies don't want artificial market barriers when they're the ones buying, they shouldn' ( Read more... )

I agree with you to a point but no one off-shores engineering to really save money. If that is the only goal then they will go down the tubes quick. In order to do it decently, and by decently I don't even mean great, you end up sinking more money into it than you would otherwise. The idea is that the emerging markets growth rates will be higher than the western world going forward. And by having local engineering, support and sales you can exploit those markets more effectively with local solutions to local requirements. This is an argument that I don't fully agree with but has a lot of merits as well. Of course the devil is in the details ( ... )
