Artists and Painters

I've been reflecting a bit more about the art instructor that passed away last week (see my previous entry about that). He once said "I'm not an artist, I'm a painter. Picasso was an artist." i don't agree with you. i think you very much are an artist. a real artist. i believe cynthia is a real artist. honestly, with my writing, i believe myself to be a real artist. i don't think it's about that pretentious artsy fartsy stuff (yes i did say that) that i encountered too often at school or in social circles. the totally abstract, poems with big words that really don't make any sense, but are designed to make you think that you're an idiot because you don't understand them. i think being an artist means sharing a part of yourself and creating from that. simple, complicated, whatever.

I use my painting ability to develope ideas that interest and entertain me (and hopefully others), but there isn't anything deep or particularly artistic about what I do. maybe you're not pouring out your emotions or protesting inequality (although who's to say that you aren't on a subconscious level), but you are creating and giving a part of yourself. and you enjoy it. that is what makes you an artist. you see the world in a particular way ( ... )
