Thought I was dealing with a seriously broken safari or os. Turns out to be a "show all bookmarks" setting that I didn't realize kept being tripped somehow. Now I know and I've set it back to normal, but even better I now know how to fix it if it happens again! Yay me and yay for learning new things - even if they do almost drive you out of your
