I've been experimenting with cutting the cord while living at my folks. It's going pretty well I'd be dropping cable but keeping internet. Will ask more questions down the road (roku, netflix etc...) but for now I'm considering my internet options. Most likely either Time Warner cable or Cincinnati Bell fioptics. I had TWC before and my folks have ( Read more... )

Nope, everything has been canceled. I'm just watching here on my laptop using their internet connection and am actually planning to probably do the same once I move. :)

Given those choices, I think I'd go with FiOptics, if your new place is wired for it. AFAIK, fiber doesn't have the same limitations as copper wire, i.e. the signal doesn't degrade the further out you go. I've been satisfied with Time Warner, but not impressed or wowed.

Thanks! I'll keep your points in mind. I'm torn between both companies due to issues in the past with both as far as customer service goes and might choose one over another due to how my dealings go during my shopping around.

As much as I want to favor the local guys, all telecom companies seem to be the same: all mediocre.

If you're going to go with fiber, find out who owns the physical cabling. I had Zoomtown -- and got rid of it -- because AT&T owned the physical phone line that Cincinnati Bell leased for my service. And when I had a problem, the Cincinnati Bell service techs couldn't fix it because there was a problem with the wiring, and AT&T wouldn't come out to fix it because I wasn't their customer.
