Everyone wants to fix the bowl system. Here's my idea.
Step 1: Take the current system
Step 2: Add the Mountain West as a BCS Conference
Step 3: Instead of 1 extra game, make it 3: 2 Semis and the championship
Step 4: Expand the number of BCS teams to 12 and the window of eligible teams appropriately.
Extra Rules:
-The locations of the 3 playoff games are to be rotated between the 4 BCS bowl sites, with three of the four hosting one each. Each semi-final is to be played on January 1 and its respective BCS Bowl moved to later in the week. These BCS Bowls will be played after the National Semis, but before the BCS Championship The BCS Championship is to be held no later than January 8th.
-A conference is only allowed up to 2 teams in the BCS and only 1 in a national semi. If a BCS conference is represented in a national semi, then a 3rd team is allowed as an at-large. Only a conference champion can be in the BCS unless the Top 4 are all conference non-winners. Teams from the same conference cannot play each other.
-Notre Dame, Army, and Navy all follow the non-BCS conference rules for eligibility.
So who does this leave?
National Semi #1
(to be played at Fiesta site)
#4 Texas Christian (MWC winner)
#1 Alabama (SEC winner)
National Semi #2
(to be played at Orange site)
#3 Cincinnati (Big East winner)
#2 Texas (Big 12 winner)Rose Bowl Game
#8 Ohio State (Big 10 winner)
#7 Oregon (Pacific 10 winner)
Sugar Bowl#11 Virginia Tech (ACC At-Large)
#5 Florida (SEC At-Large 1)Fiesta Bowl#10 Iowa (Big 10 At-Large)
#6 Boise State (Non-BCS winner)Orange Bowl#12 LSU (SEC At-Large 2)
#9 Georgia Tech (ACC winner)
BCS Nat'l Championship
(to be played at Rose Bowl)
Winner of National Semi #2
Winner of National Semi #1
Best of both worlds: Something convoluted AND a playoff.
