First impressions are everything, they say.

I suppose this is true even in music and with CDs.

For instance, I am a huge Peter Gabriel fan, yet I ‘m not overly familiar with his 1992 album Us. Which, I realized this week, is a shame.

Joe - you have just made me dig out 'Us' and play it. It's brilliant.

I didn't get that album for a long time either. But then, I came to it knowing nothing but 'So', and didn't really appreciate that it was 'So' that was the odd one out. I was too young to appreciate Gabriel's music really, and now I am older and have the entire catalogue I find it's that commercial album I reach for the least whilst Us is held in high esteem. Secret World itself is one of my all time favourite tracks.

I saw Gabriel in 2005 on the Still Growing Up tour and it was the best non-marillion gig I've ever been to. I remember being worried he'd have lost his voice or some of the magic; then he came on and did Waiting For The Flood solo and my goosebumps had goosebumps. He hasn't lost a thing. In fact he's better than ever.

I might have to invest in that DVD too now. Paula Cole is marvellous with Gabriel there - I'd always thought of her as a female PG anyway, so great to hear them together.

...which of course leads me to the problem with US and indeed every Gabriel studio album. There is about 1% of the emotion and power of that live clip.
