I took dr_tectonic's advice, and thanks to www.20000-names.com, here's a better study of those results. We're still not at the level I'd quite like to be, but it's getting there.
I'm not sure you can get away from doing it by hand, but you could probably skimp effectively by sorting the unknowns by frequency and only looking at the common ones. Skim through once for the obvious ones like Mattias, Francois, and Crysta (I'll bet they're mostly variant spellings or unusual compounds), spend an hour looking up the most frequent of what's left...
I don't know how far you can beat it down anyway, given how common ambiguous English names like Kelly, Jean, and Pat are.
