I had William make my Faire boots, and he did so to this pattern.

As for "period", I've never seen a costume director yet who objected to Bald Mountain-style boots, no matter the decoration, as long as you weren't trying to go around in sneakers or sandals with Velcro straps. True period footwear is really hard to find any info on.

Make thigh high spats with buttonholes on both sides. Then you can cover the dragon and still use the buttons. Make them in green and black leather, even.
