This is the augmented end of Chapter 1. I went back and added a few more paragraphs. Please bear with me as I produce the text in a nonlinear process. I know the timeline of my posts here has been skipping around a lot. But I just write what I think of when I think of it, and I have a mental picture of the overall narrative flow, so I keep going back and filling in gaps left in earlier chapters. Everything is getting fitted into place chronologically, even though it wasn't written in that order.
